McCaig's Tower.
This victorian folly was commissioned by John McCaig
a wealthy banker who wanted a lasting memorial to
himself and his family. Work began in 1897 and stopped
when John died in 1902. It was based on Rome's Colosseum
and provided work for local stonemasons during the
winter months. The unfinished tower now contains a
garden and gives good views across the bay.

Oban bay.
Oban is protected from the worst of the winter storms by the island of Kerrera which acts as a natural barrier to the elements. The mountains of the Morvern peninsular dominate the horizon and also help to shelter the 'little bay' that gives Oban its name. The ferries to eight different Scottish islands come and go from this busy little town. In summer cruise ships stop off at Oban on their way around the coast.
